Guinea’s Coup: Ending Corrective Coups Once and for All

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya came into power on 5 September in a scenario that is not unheard of: the head of an elite battalion deposed President Alpha Condé to save Guinea through a “corrective coup”. This is the latest of a decade-long series of coups hitting West Africa where junior officers toppled an elected regime in the name of saving a country from a crisis. While the crisis was undeniable, how can the international community help prevent the next one?
